Blueprint for new-look Bath
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 08:00
It isn't often that I would put the words "exciting" and "council document" in the same sentence, but in this instance I think it is justified.
At long last, Bath now has a blueprint to move forward and vastly improve the appearance of our city and the way we get around it.
In my first week as the new cabinet member for development and major projects, I had the pleasure of presenting to councillors a document which sets out an ambitious plan to breathe new life into our city, a plan to massively transform the way we view, use and experience the centre of Bath.
Improving the appearance of our streets and transforming Bath's public spaces is a top priority and we now have clear proposals on how to achieve this ambition. Our proposals set out major improvements to transport, urban design, street furniture, open spaces, paving and pedestrian access.
The ideas include more pedestrian areas, modern street signs, better public transport links, and a more coherently designed city centre.
These plans are a long-term vision for creating a more attractive, vibrant city which we can all enjoy. But there are improvements which we are starting to see already and which can be built upon in the near future, including investing in cleaner streets and de-cluttering unnecessary street signs.
These ideas go hand in hand with an integrated plan for improved public transport, with 21st-century rapid transport into the city centre and less congestion through increased park and ride use.
It will mean we can transform the centre of Bath into an attractive, pedestrian-friendly area with world-class design of which we can be proud.
I am immensely looking forward to hearing the views of the residents of Bath on these exciting proposals.
The proposals are available for all to view on the council website at www.bathnes.gov.uk/future /default.htm
