Tories start search for election candidates

Roll up, roll up! If you want to be a Conservative MP for the South West, now is the time to step forward. The party has opened candidate applications for the next round of seats, including Plymouth Moor View (held by Labour's Alison Seabeck), Taunton Deane (Liberal Democrat Jeremy Browne's constituency) and Yeovil (which is Lib Dem David Laws' seat).     An organisation which provides start-up loans to new businesses in the West Country is appealing for people with business skills to become mentors to new ventures. The South West Investment Group has so far lent £464,300 to 81 fledgling businesses, with a focus on helping 18 to 30-year-olds to launch new companies.     Firms see signs of improvement

    Confidence among small businesses has increased to the highest level in three years, according to a new report.The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said financial services firms were the most optimistic, while conditions seemed to be improving in manufacturing.A survey of over 2,400 firms showed more expected to hire staff in the coming months.     Somerset town could get 140 new homes

    Developers want to build 140 homes on open farmland in Somerset. Residents fear Redrow's scheme, for Old Wells Road in West Shepton, could be given the go-ahead despite the fields not being allocated for housing. Even if the town decides against the estate, there could be little it can do to fight the plans. Miscalculations in Mendip District Council's housing numbers have left the Local Plan in tatters and seen another estate, at Evercreech, approved.
