Betty Gilham who will be remembered by former pupils of Timsbury Secondary Modern School where she worked for many years in the kitchen died on July 21 at the Royal United Hospital in Bath aged 86.
Betty lived in her home village all her life, spending most of that time at her home with husband Denis but she had been at The Laurels Nursing Home in Timsbury since Denis died in 2010.
Born in June 1928 she attended local schools before working as a housemaid. Her employers wanted to take her to the USA but her father refused and she went to work in Paulton. She married Denis in 1948 and their son David was born in 1953. She worked at the secondary modern school until it became the village primary school in 1971 and then moved to Fry's at Keynsham where she remained until her retirement. She is survived by son David, daughter-in-law Janet, grandchildren Alexandra and Steven and great-grandchildren Lewis, Owen, William and Lucas to whom she was devoted.
