West Country makes political history with more women MEPs elected than men for first time

The 2014 European elections have marked a remarkable feat for female politicians in the South West after four out of region's six MEPs voted in are women.

Nationally Ukip have made history by coming top of the polls and beating both the Conservative and Labour parties.

Now in the South West Ukip and the Conservatives have two MEPs each, with Labour and the Green Party getting one each.

Speaking after the region's female landslide victory South West Green Party MEP Molly Scott Cato said: "The conclusion we should draw is that we need to change our politics so that it is more responsive to the people we are representing and that we need to change Westminster politics so that it is more inviting to women politicians."

Meanwhile, jubilant Ukip leader Nigel Farage said his "people's army" was on its way to Westminster.
