MATCH REPORT: Winscombe 2 Churchill Club 70 1
Winscombe returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over a belligerent Churchill Club 70 side at the Rec.
The hosts were short of seven regulars, including the whole of the back four, and Churchill took advantage with a tenth-minute goal when the centre-forward ran through the middle before slotting past keeper Page.
Things could have got worse for the home side as the visitors had the ball in the net again, only for it to be ruled out for offside.
This seemed to wake Winscombe up and, with Flint and Stoves pulling the strings, they gradually got a foothold in the game.
The hosts equalised after 37 minutes when King was fouled in the box and Flint coolly put the resulting penalty away.
The second half started with Winscombe firmly in control and with Cureton and Phillips now looking solid. Hutchinson was replaced by Payne, who immediately started to run at the visitors.
From a rare Churchill break, it took a great tackle from Phillips to win the ball and he passed to Flint, who nodded to Payne. He brought the ball down before firing a long-range effort into the far corner to brighten up an otherwise dull game.
Mike Hosey came on to make his first-team debut and looked assured as others around him began to lose their heads.
Winscombe Fish Bar man of the match: Flint.
On Saturday, Winscombe travel to North Curry.
