Warning on bogus clothes collections

Residents are being warned about a potentially bogus clothing collection company that is targeting central Somerset.

A company called Do Not Delay has been distributing bags in Street and Glastonbury appealing for clothing donations to support a project that claims to provide "information and screenings for women in Lithuania to prevent breast cancer".

Posing as a "breast cancer prevention programme", Do Not Delay claims to be a partner of a firm called Intersecond Ltd, which is registered as a clothing and footwear wholesaler in London.

It is suspected that the donations are actually sold on for profit, possibly at car boot sales, and no money ever reaches cancer victims.

"I visited the website after one of these bags was put through my front door," said Glastonbury resident Paul Jackson.

"All of the sites I found suggested that this is a scam.

These people really are the lowest of the low and they are diverting clothing and bric-a-brac from genuine charities."

Katie Clark, from Street, contacted the Gazette after she grew suspicious of a bag put through his door.

She said: "At best the leaflet is misleading and at worst they are lying about who they represent, so it is a scam.

"I'm not sure if this is illegal but I am dead sure it's immoral. It gives you a horrible feeling that they are coming to try to dupe you and I think it is disgusting."

Consumer Direct said people who wanted to give to charity should check for the organisation's full name, address and registration number on the leaflet. It also suggested that donors check with the Charity Commission website to find out whether it is a registered charity.

A spokesman said: "Anyone who has unwanted items should always check the details on any leaflets posted through their doors. If there is no telephone number, or if the number is unreachable, you should be suspicious of the motives."

Calls from this paper to Intersecond Ltd have not been returned.
