Homes in the Northmoor area of Somerset have been evacuated this afternoon due to increased flooding fears.

Somerset County Council said a small number of properties in the area have been identified as being at 'significant risk of flooding' from 10pm tonight until Friday evening.

After an emergency meeting held this morning, a decision has been made to create a team to advise and assist affected residents with an evacuation.

The flood-hit area is near Burrowbridge, and the evacuation team will include staff from Somerset County Council, Sedgemoor District Council and the Environment Agency.

"Further multi-agency meetings, including representatives from the emergency services, have been arranged to plan for any further rise in water levels," said a county council spokesman.

"The Environment Agency is continuing to monitor the rising water levels carefully as run-off from the hills seeps into the area.

"The Met Office does not forecast anymore significant rainfall over the coming days, but many other properties in the area do still remain at risk and residents are being advised to remain aware."
