Clevedon's Chris Coles hopes training alongside the country's finest players will aid his chances of glory at the upcoming English National Badminton Championships.

Coles is confident of reaching the semi-finals of both the mixed doubles with Jessica Fletcher and men's doubles with Matt Nottingham - with whom he is the third seed.

The competition begins on February 1 in Manchester, with Coles desperate to do well having missed out last year through injury.

Now in full-time training at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes, Coles is confident of bettering the quarter-final appearance he made with Fletcher two years ago, and the last-four stage he has previously achieved with Nottingham.

"Me and Jess reached the quarter-finals two years ago," said the 20-year-old. "In previous tournaments me and Matt have got to semi-finals so it has been okay but I'm looking to go one step further this time.

"In training the sparring is excellent so that should set us apart from the rest of the country - the ones that are looking to bite our tails - being here training full-time every day should set us apart from them.

"If I can potentially get to the semi-finals that will be brilliant."
