New Wessex Centre timed and observation trial champion Simon Prideaux will be out to start 2013 on a winning note in the British Sporting Sidecar Association’s hour-long event on one of the toughest and rugged courses in the West at Beaconsfield Farm, West Harptree on Tuesday.

The annual challenge never fails to attract a big entry, which on this occasion is expected to include Jeremy Cross, Jason and Mark Hamblin, Peter King, Paul Manning and Andy Scrivens, Andy Frost and Tom Smith.

There may be an event for sidecars following on from the solo event if there is sufficient support.

Tomorrow the Kingswood club stage the final round of their club trials series at Conygre Fields, Cromhall, South Gloucestershire. Around 70 riders are expected to contest a three or four lap event, including most of the Wessex Centre’s leading experts, clubman experts and clubmen.

The West of England Club in Devon stages the last of 22 events this year, a long-distance road trial, which starts and finishes at Ipplepen, near Newton Abbot, the same day.

Most competitors will enter at the start before setting out on a five-mile course containing 30 observed sections.

More than 100 solos and sidecars mingle with 160 cars in the Motorcycling Club of Great Britain’s annual Exeter trial, which starts from Stourton Cross, near Okehampton, Popham Airfield, near Basingstoke, and Watermoor Services, at Cirencester, at 7.30pm next Friday night. It finishes on the Saturday afternoon at Babbacombe, near Torquay.

Twenty riders have chosen Cirencester as the starting point, 27 will go from Popham and 40 from Stourton Cross.

They converge on the Haynes Museum at Sparkford, near Yeovil, for a supper stop. They will be joined there by a further 15 classic motorcycles for the long ride through the night.

At 1am the first few will be arriving at Windwhistle Hill between Chard and Crewkerne for a stop and restart test and they face seven more observed hills before arriving at Crealy Park in Devon for a breakfast halt at around 5am.

Then at first light, they tackle more difficult hills including Tillerton Steep, Fingle Bridge, Wooston Steep, Sims and Tipley close to the finish at the Trecarn Hotel.

Tomorrow: Kingswood MCC end of club series trial, Conygre Fields, Cromhall, South Glos (10.30am); West of England MCC long distance trial, Crosslands, Ipplepen, near Newton Abbot (10.30am).

Tuesday January 1: Taunton MCC trial, Trickey Warren, Churchinford, Somerset (11am); BSSA(Wessex) timed and observation trials, Beaconsfield Farm, West Harptree, Somerset (11am).
