A thief used a fire extinguisher to break into two rooms at a luxury Somerset hotel and steal items from guests at the weekend.

Police said the culprit spent time in the hotel bar at Babington House near Frome from around 1.30pm on Saturday afternoon, before breaking into the rooms between 4.30pm and 5pm.

Among the items stolen were platinum earrings, an iPad and an iPhone.

Officers investigating the crime have described the suspect as a white man, in his late 30s or early 40s and clean shaven.

"He was around 5ft 6in to 5ft 7in tall, with a closely shaved head and very short light blonde hair," said an Avon and Somerset Police spokesman.

"He had a stocky build and big chest as if he worked out. He had a boxer's nose and spoke with a Westcountry accent.

"He had two tattoos – a small black tattoo of a web between the thumb and forefinger on his left hand and a face-like image on his inside right calf."

Anyone with any information should call PC Sarah Child on 101.
