Old Redcliffians and Taunton Titans will be looking to join Weston-super-Mare in the semi-finals of this season’s Renault Somerset Cup when they meet this evening at Broad Plain’s St John’s Lane’s ground (7.30pm).
The Titans stormed back from an enforced four-week break from National Two South action to win 28-10 at Clifton at the weekend.
“We were happy with our performance against Clifton picking up five valuable league points and playing some good rugby in the process,” said Taunton’s player-coach Tony Yapp.
“This cup game gives a lot of our fringe players the opportunity to show what they can do in a meaningful game. Old Reds are going to be really tough and we will have to put in a very good performance to get the right result.”
Old Redcliffians, third in Tribute South West One West, had klast Saturday’s league game against Cleve postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at their Scotland Lane ground.
“The league is our main priority, and we’re also in the semi-final of the Charles Saunders Combination Cup,” said Old Redcliffians chairman of rugby Kevin Coster. “But we’re fielding a very competitive side, with the intentions of winning the game.
“We know it’s a big ask, because Taunton play a couple of divisions above us, but this is a one-off cup tie, and anything can happen. If Taunton are a bit off-colour, and we’re at the top of our game, then we have a chance of going through.”
Broad Plain ask that those attending the match avoid parking illegally around the club. Some temporary parking is available at the nearby Malago Vale Industrial Estate which is five minutes walk from the ground.
