A woman in Swindon had the shock of her life when she opened her airing cupboard door to put some washing away – and saw a 5ft python staring back at her.
The woman, who lives in a block of flats in Ash Brake in the north of the town, quickly shut the door and called for help at just before 5pm yesterday.
Eventually two specially-trained animal rescue firefighters from Wiltshire’s rural rescue team arrived, and were able to grab the snake and take it away.
“It was a surprise to her when she opened the airing cupboard door because she definitely had not put the snake there. It wasn’t hers,” said a spokeswoman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.
“A couple of our rural team have been trained in snake handling so we were able to deal with it. It’s currently at Swindon Reptile Rescue and is fine, and the lady has calmed down now too,” said a spokesman for Wiltshire Fire Brigade.
“Both she and us have tried to find who it belongs to and through social media, we think we’ve tracked down a chap who used to live in the same block of flats who has contacted us, so hopefully there’ll be a happy reunion here,” she added.
