Southampton's promotion to the Premier League has priced Yeovil Town out of a deal for defender Ryan Dickson.
The left back is believed to have interested Glovers’ boss Gary Johnson after impressing on loan for a month at the start of the year.
With the Saints returning to the top flight, Dickson is likely to be even further away from manager Nigel Adkins’ plans.
However, a pay rise activated by the south coast club’s climb from the npower Championship and a remaining year on Dickson’s contract has ruled out a Huish Park return.
Talking to Yeovil’s website, Johnson said: “Ryan would be a good signing and we would love to take Ryan but his money has gone up double for Southampton getting to the Premier League. Players don’t like to give up that money too easily and he has another year on his deal so financially that would be impossible and that’s a no.”
Former Plymouth Argyle man Dickson played five times for the Glovers before heading to Leyton Orient on a temporary basis.
Johnson also ruled out moves for recently-released ex-Cardiff City hitman Jon Parkin, striker Freddie Eastwood and Chesterfield’s Nathan Smith, who left Yeovil a year ago.
“He (Parkin) was on some of our lists earlier on, but you have got to remember some of these lads have been on big money for a number of years and it is quite difficult for some to play on less money for us,” said Johnson. “That is what we are up against, sometimes.
“Nathan has been here before and we have our left back targets. I like him, Terry and Darren said he was good and he has done very well for Chesterfield.
“But they got relegated and not because of him. I watched him at Chesterfield but he is a no as I do not really want to go back and we have some good names in the pipeline.”
Defender Jamie McAllister and attacker Jamal Cambell-Ryce - both of whom played under Johnson at Bristol City - have also been linked with the Glovers.
Campbell-Ryce terrorised Yeovil on a bare Notts County pitch last season, whilst Scot McAllister has said he wants to remain in the South West after settling with his family during his time at Ashton Gate.
Johnson is keeping his targets close to his chest but said more than just Keanu Marsh-Brown, Sam Foley, Richard Hinds and Reuben Reid had committed their futures to the club.
He said: “We are really pleased with what we have got and a couple in the pipeline that we know we are getting. So if the season started tomorrow the good thing is we have a good XI and a couple of names people do not know about and we cannot say until they have agreed.
“We have certainly made a couple of offers and it looks promising. Suddenly we have got a group of lads we think will compete at this level and obviously we will have the loan market to use a bit later on.
“But you have got to get as many people as possible on contract and then you just add with loans to enhance it when you can.”
Johnson added that he believes attacker Foley - who passed a medical at Huish Park last week - is ready for League One football after struggling at Cheltenham Town.
He said: “It was the variety of goals he can score that attracted us. Yes he scored them in the Conference South and then the Conference when Newport were promoted.
“But I am a manager and we are a club that knows if someone is scoring goals and doing well in the Conference they can play a league or two higher, especially if they have that football brain and ability. That is what he has got.
“I think he is a late developer and when he was at Cheltenham I do not believe he was strong enough for League football.
“But I believe he has come of age and I think he can be a big asset for us in midfield or up front.
“He does look a comfortable player when it comes to taking chances and being in front of goal.”
