SHEPTON Mallet Infants School has been rated good by Ofsted inspectors, four years after it was put into special measures.

Ofsted’s report said the school has “made sure that teaching is typically good and an increasing proportion is outstanding”. It was praised for its “unrelenting focus on improving the quality of teaching”.

According to the Ofsted inspector, the school, which only came out of special measures two years ago, is now rated good and has improved strongly since the last inspection when it was rated satisfactory.

The inspector said: “Pupils of all ages, of differing abilities and from all backgrounds make good progress and achieve well. In 2013 more children in the Reception class reached or exceeded the level of development for their age than was found nationally.”

Honoria Thompson, head teacher, said: “I am absolutely thrilled with the report. We have a fantastic team of highly-trained and committed staff and it is due to the hard work and dedication of the whole school community that we have reached this point. Our policy of having extra adults in the Reception classes enables us to give our children a very secure start to their schooling, and, as the report says, we are in a good position to improve even further.”

The Ofsted inspectors also said that throughout the school and nursery “tasks are set at the right difficulty for all pupils, including the most able”. They said children are “well prepared for learning in the next key stage” and pupils feel safe, enjoy school and there are high expectations for behaviour and achievement.

Kate Lovell, chairwoman of governors for the school, said: “We are delighted that Ofsted have recognised the improvements made and would like to congratulate all the hardworking members of staff. With their support we are confident the school will continue to go from strength to strength in the future.”
