A multi-vehicle collision has closed a northbound stretch of the M5 motorway through Somerset this afternoon.
Several vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened between junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare and junction 20 for Clevedon at around 4pm this afternoon.
The crash left debris scattered across the carriageway, as well as an oil spillage, and the motorway was closed as emergency services attended and the recovery operation began.
Three people were reported to be injured in the crash, none seriously.
The closure caused tailbacks of more than seven miles on the northbound carriageway, leaving motorists facing delays of up to three hours.
Traffic was moving very slowly on the southbound carriageway, with heavy congestion between junctions 20 and 18 and delays of around an hour.
The Highways Agency said the motorway would not reopen before 6.30pm this evening.
