SHOP of the week this week is pet supply store Tina’s Pet Pantry, Town Street.
The shop, owned by Tina Edgar, has been trading for a number of years.
Tina said: “I used to work here for another person but took it on myself four years ago, next April.
“At school, I always said I wanted to work with animals and managed to get a part-time job here. I was asked to take it on and made a lot of great friends through the shop and I do a lot for Race for Life. I started here 20 plus years ago.”
Tina’s Pet Pantry sells supplies for dogs, cats and small animals including collars, foods and accessories.
Shepton Mallet Shop of the Week aims to promote independent trading in the town.
Tina said: “I’m always offering advice. I’ve done pet management exams and have qualifications so if I can help I will.
“Independent trading is making sure you can help. If somebody wants a specific type of food or something I will go out of my way to get it in for them. You don’t get that personality with chain shops, and you’ve got to have personality.
“Shepton High Street is getting there, but we just need more shops and more people coming back into the town to support shops.
“I’d like to thank all my customers for their support over the years.”
Alan Stone, on behalf of Shepton Mallet Chamber of Commerce, said: “There is something warm and friendly about an independent pet food shop with its distinctive smells, especially compared to the sterile prepack feel of some modern pet ‘supermarkets’.
“A few years ago when the then owner of this shop said he was closing down it was saved by local support and the then manageress. “It is a credit to their customers that even in the face of increased competition it has not only survived but thrived.”
