Somerset must refocus quickly

Rory Hamilton-Brown, Jack Brooks and James Harris – just about the three best domestic players on the county market this winter – have confirmed they are signing for Sussex, Yorkshire and Middlesex, respectively.

Somerset expressed an interest in both Hamilton-Brown and Harris – and no doubt considered trying to lure Brooks, too. For all the good work that has been done at Taunton these past few years, Brian Rose's departure and the absence of a director of cricket must not be allowed to harm the county's chances of success next summer.

It used to be said that you know you are getting old when you start seeing policemen who are younger than you – and the same can be said of professional footballers.

In their Capital One Cup game at West Brom, Liverpool introduced Jerome Sinclair from the substitutes' bench.

He was born in September 1996, three months after Euro 96 and only four months before Jamie Carragher – a team-mate on Wednesday evening – made his Liverpool debut. Feeling old? I know I am.
