Chris Sanigar is set to unveil Bristol boxing’s best-kept secret at the Hand Arena in Clevedon on Saturday.

Although Ricky Pow was born in the city and has been working in Sanigar’s Bristol gym for nearly three years, he has yet to box in the United Kingdom.

Taken to Spain by his parents at the age of four, Pow was raised on the Iberian Peninsula and was introduced to the noble art in the province of Vallenciana. Six of his seven professional fights have taken place in Spain, with the other having been in Ireland.

Now 25, light heavyweight prospect Pow is ready to introduce himself to West Country fight fans when he appears on the under-card of the Tyson Fury versus Vinny Maddalone bout in front of 2,500 people at the Hand Arena.

“It has been a long time coming, but now it is here I’m really excited about boxing in England,” said Pow, who boasts an unblemished record since joining the paid ranks in 2009.

“My career has been in Spain until now and the Bristol people don’t really know me. This is my chance to show them who I am and what I can do.

“I jumped at the chance to work with Chris Sanigar when I came back to Bristol a few years ago and now I want to make my mark in this country.

“I’m building my record and working towards getting myself into a position to challenge for a major title. This is the latest stepping stone in that process.”

Pow has first-hand knowledge of Manchester-born Irish champion Fury, having boxed him in an ABA novice quarter-final several years ago.

He said: “When I opened the door and first saw him, I was shocked by the size difference.

“Fury was massive and I knew then that I had to get down to light heavyweight if I was going to have a real chance.

“But I still gave him a good fight and went the distance before losing on points.”

Supporting Tyson will be middleweight sensation Chris Eubank Junior in his fifth professional fight and British champion Lee Haskins from Bristol, who is challenging Darlington’s Stuart Hall for the vacant European Bantamweight title.

The undercard will also feature Tyson’s cousin, Phill Fury, Bristol fighter Michael Graydon and Tamuka Mucha from Reading.

Tickets starting from £30 can be purchased from the Hennessy Sports box office on 01925 755 222, Ticketline on 0844 888 4402, Ticketmaster on 0844 847 2500 or from Sanigar Events on 0117 949 6699.
