People have been urged to take care with items left out for recycling after a householder’s cat was found with its head stuck in a baked bin tin.

Carole Miller put up notices in Horton, Somerset, asking people to look in their garages and sheds for her missing cat Inky.

The cat was found in a neighbouring garden – with a baked bean tin wedged on its head.

Carole’s daughter Channon Preece said the cat had probably been sniffing in a recycling bin, and added: “Perhaps we should think a bit more about it by putting cans and bottles in plastic bags to avoid problems.”

Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) advises residents to rinse tin cans to remove food and, if possible, to take care in squashing them, with lids inside, which would stop animals from getting jammed. Stacking recycling boxes or putting a board on top will keep cans out of reach, or for a few pounds, residents can buy lids or covers for recycling boxes; search for "lids and covers" at the SWP website: http://tinyurl.com/6d2bwln
