People living in Worle were put on alert on Sunday night after storage ponds at Summer Lane started to overtop, putting around 50 nearby homes at risk of flooding.

Around 50 firefighters worked through the night, using three specialist high volume pumps – capable of pumping 7,000 litres of water a minute – to divert the water onto local farmland. They continued working throughout yesterday and overnight.

A rest centre was set up by North Somerset Council at the nearby Castle Batch School in case residents had to be evacuated.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Darren Bane said: “Crews acted quickly and using the three high volume pumps managed to avert any homes from being flooded.

“The situation could have been a lot worse if it was not for this quick response. The local community has really rallied around and have been showing their gratitude by bringing out trays of tea to our crews.”
