Ten-man Yeovil Town hit the self-destruct button in a disastrous second half at Preston North End, condemning them to their fifth straight defeat.

The Glovers have never lost so many consecutive Football League games since promotion in 2003 but capitulating after the break ensured their mediocre hosts cantered to a 3-2 npower League One victory.

Jeffrey Monakana's strike, two own goals and Ed Upson's red card after the break undermined a promising start from Gary Johnson's men and an interval lead earned by Gavin Williams' penalty.

The defeated manager said: "It is always a frustrating watch when your team doesn't perform for long enough.

"We started alright and for most of the first half we did alright, although we did let them back into the game before half time and that did give them the impetus to go in at half time saying 'look, it's only 1-0, we can get back.

"Unfortunately they came out, put us under a little bit more pressure with a bit more direct play and unfortunately we couldn't get up the other end to create the situations that would put us further ahead."

Johnson made three changes to the side defeated 1-0 by Sheffield United, starting his three remaining loanees.

Fulham's Dan Burn made his debut ahead of Richard Hinds, Bristol City's Joe Edwards came in for Sam Foley and Reading's Gozie Ugwu replaced James Hayter as the only striker.

The Glovers were handed a dream start on seven minutes when Preston keeper Thorsten Stuckmann was adjudged to have tripped Ugwu just inside the box as he raced on to Korey Smith's well-weighted through ball.

Gavin Williams kept his nerve to thump beyond Stuckmann despite the stopper diving the right way.

On 16 minutes the hosts showed signs of bouncing back, Chris Beardsley heading straight at Marek Stech from a right wing cross before nodding over from a similar position moments later.

Stech flapped at Scott Laird's 18th minute corner but Bailey Wright could only drill the loose ball across target and wide.

The Glovers ended a shaky spell on 22 minutes when Luke Ayling broke, laying off for Smith and acting as a decoy to create an opening for the midfielder.

His cross was nodded away and Paul Huntington charged down ex-teammate Ed Upson's shot before Smith's effort was deflected.

On 28 minutes Monakana crossed from the right with Yeovil still stretched from a Preston attack, Stuart Beavon wastefully failing to trouble Stech with a free header.

Following an uneventful conclusion to the first half, the second sprung to life just three minutes in.

Ayling timed his overlap to beat the offside flag and squared for Edwards who in turn flicked towards Ugwu. However, the forward could not guide the ball towards goal.

On 57 minutes Preston deservedly netted the game's second goal as lively wingers Will Hayhurst and Monakana linked to deadly effect.

After racing on to a fine diagonal ball, Hayhurst's left wing cross was inexplicably left by Beardsley but Monkana intercepted on the right, cut back on to his left foot and hit the net despite Burn's valiant slide.

Moments later Beavon made the most of a shaken Yeovil defence, creating room to unleash a shot that Stech beat away.

Yeovil continued to crumble on 64 minutes when North End took the lead, making the most of their visitors' fragility from wide areas.

Monakana's cross reached the far post and Ayling leapt above Beardsley only to head in despite Stech's palm.

Yeovil's woes intensified on 76 minutes when Upson saw red for two bookings in eight minutes, the second yellow for tripping Monakana.

With seven minutes left Beavon stung Stech's hands from 20 yards and as the ball was drilled back across goal by substitute Jack King, Burn was powerless to find his own net.

However, the towering defender atoned for his error on 86 minutes, heading home Jamie McAllister's wide free kick.

Webster thought he had headed a 90th minute equaliser from a deep set piece but a Preston defender hooked clear inches from the line.
