POLICE launch extra patrols during late-night shopping periods in Yeovil tonight.

"Operation Festive" is aimed at reassuring shoppers while deterring criminals. Officers will also make sure people observe alcohol restriction zones in the town centre. Plain clothes officers will be deployed as well as high visibility patrols.

PC Amanda Cross said: "People should continue to use the town centre with confidence. Some people may think they can commit crime in Yeovil. I want them to be clear that we will not allow this."

Police have also issued security advice to shoppers.

PC Cross said: "Always carry your purchases with you wherever possible. If you do have to leave them in the car put them out of sight in the boot and try to do this when no one is around. Keep receipts separate from gifts to make it harder for stolen items to be returned to shops for cash."
