A very unlucky giant in North Perrott who has twice fallen victim to the elements is hoping his new body will stand the test of time.

The 14-foot straw bale man, who points the way to North Perrott Fruit Shop and Garden Centre, has been rebuilt for the second time using apple crates.

He has now been appropriately rechristened with the name Woody.

The gentle giant was torched in October by vandals and, after being rebuilt a week later, was all washed up after heavy rainfall in December.

Owner Jonathan Hoskyns said: “Sadly, having first succumbed to fire, our second attempt at a straw man eventually became the victim of incessant rain – or perhaps in the best traditions of celebrity, drink got the better of him. He certainly looked a bit tipsy, toppled over as he was.

“It was clear that a more robust character was required for the winter period so some ideas for an apple box man evolved.

“The first attempts were a little too robotic but hopefully, we have created a character who is, at best, not too scary for his younger fans.”

The giant man is a big hit with youngsters in North Perrott who enjoy waving to him on their way to Misterton First School.

He joined in with annual events such as Movember, when he sported a dashing moustache to raise awareness for male cancer and other related charities.

For Christmas he was adorned in flashing lights.

Woody is now being used to hang happy birthday banners for local schoolchildren.

The straw sculpture was the brainchild of Mr Hoskyns’s niece, Millie Dyer, 8, who decided she wanted to make a straw bale man of her own after seeing one on her way home from a holiday in Cornwall.
