One of the West's most prominent museum directors has revealed he is leaving for a top job in Oxford. Dr Alexander Sturgis, the director of Bath's Holburne Museum for the past nine years, has been appointed as the director of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Dr Sturgis led the Bath museum through a radical transformation with a £13 million modern extension.
Dr Sturgis said he was excited about his new job but sad to be saying goodbye to Bath and the Holburne.
He said: “It is a huge honour to be given a chance to lead the Ashmolean however hard it will be to leave the Holburne after eight exceptionally happy and eventful years.
“There is much I will miss about the Holburne perhaps above all, its wonderfully committed and energetic staff and volunteers who have helped the museum achieve so much in the time I have been here.”
The trustees have now started the process for appointing a new museum director.
