A pair of swans who have built their nest next to one of the West's most famous – and oldest bridges – have been causing quite a stir. The pair built the nest next to the Town Bridge in Bradford on Avon, and locals were so enamoured they set up something of a vigil as waters rose earlier this month, fearing the nest could be washed away. That is what happened last year in a spot on the other side of the riverbank, but then RSPB experts advised those guarding the nest not to interfere. They said the pair of swans 'needed to learn' about building a nest above the water levels. Locals created a new pastime – dropping sticks and branches to the swans to help build up the nest, and then someone set up a sweepstake to name the date the first egg would hatch.
