A grieving family have been ordered to remove a £300 black granite memorial from a grave – because it might blow away.

Andy Cole, 44, died when his motorbike collided with a van as he rode home from work.

His family buried the grandfather at Kingsdown, Swindon, three weeks after the accident, and a headstone was put up six months later. But now widow Karen and parents, Terry and Joy Cole, have been told the 10in-high memorial must be bolted to the headstone or be confiscated.

Terry, 74, said: "You can see that it's not going to blow away. You've got to draw the line somewhere with plastic items, but this is an official memorial. It's been made by a funeral parlour; if they're not going to respect that, what are they going to respect?"

A spokesman for the council said: "The memorial they have on their plot would be fine as long as it was attached to the headstone."
