The M4 was closed in Wiltshire today, after a police car was involved in a crash.

The crash happened on the westbound carriageway of the M4, between junction 16 for Swindon and junction 17 for Chippenham, at about 10.45am, Wiltshire Police said.

The accident involved the patrol car, which was stationary on the hard shoulder, and an Audi A3. A police officer was taken to hospital with an injured shoulder and is expected to be released later today.

The male driver of the Audi and a child passenger were also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Two lanes of the M4 were re-opened shortly after 11.30am and the road was fully reopened just before 12.30pm.

“The serious collision investigation team at Wiltshire Police are now investigating the incident,” the spokesman added.

Police are appealing for witnesses to get in touch.
