Drivers on the A303 and A37 in Somerset faced major delays tonight after a lorry carrying a load of paper went up in flames near Ilchester.

Dozens of firefighters from across the county fought the blaze near Podimore Roundabout, which closed a stretch of the A303 for several hours.

The alarm was raised at around 6.30pm this evening, and fire crews from Yeovil, Martock, Street and Wiveliscombe were called to the scene.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the lorry containing a large amount of paper was well alight when crews arrived, and that five appliances were battling to extinguish the blaze.

The road's eastbound carriageway remained closed between the junctions for the A37 and A372 tonight as emergency services remained at the scene.
