Voters took to the polls today for the 2013 Somerset County Council elections.

Polling stations closed at 10pm tonight, with more than 50 seats up for grabs across the county in the Mendip, Sedgemoor, South Somerset, Taunton Deane and West Somerset districts.

Candidates elected to become county councillors will hold the purse strings of an annual budget of £748m.

There are 252 candidates standing for seven political parties, as well as independent candidates, and 38 of them (15 per cent) are current county councillors.

Twenty members of the existing council - 11 Conservatives and nine Liberal Democrats - are not standing for re-election.
