Hungry swans at Abbotsbury build up energy for mating game

Things are beginning to move at the Abbotsbury Swannery in Dorset. Warm weather forecast for this week should see the start of the mating season for the colony's 600 mute swans. Wardens will soon be putting out cut reed for the swans to build nests with and the first cygnets should be hatched at the end of April or beginning of May. In the meantime, daily feeding with corn brings out the gannet in some of the swans, who wait for the warden and his wheelbarrow full of food and duly help themselves PICTURE: RICHARD AUSTIN
