The father of two young boys who were fired upon with an air gun in Yeovil last week has said how lucky they were not to be hurt.

His sons – aged eight and 11 – were playing in the garden of their Mudford Road home at around 6.40pm on Thursday when the incident happened.

Police said the family heard a whistling sound and an air pellet was seen to hit a concrete post nearby.

It is believed the shot came from the area of the flats on Roping Road.

The boys’ 45-year-old dad said: “I’d not long come home from work, my wife was outside doing some gardening and the boys were on the trampoline when they were fired upon.

“It just missed them. The pellet hit the fence and landed on the trampoline.

“The kids heard a noise. They thought someone was throwing stones at them. We only got one of the pellets. I’m sure more than one was fired at them but we couldn’t find them in the grass.

“It’s one of those things you don’t want to see happen to your kids.

“If they had have hit them it could have done some damage.

“Luckily our kids weren’t hurt but it could be another kid that gets hit. Someone could be blinded with one of those pellets.

“The kids were totally innocent, having fun in the garden.

“You expect them to be safe in your own garden. I want something to be done so it doesn’t happen again.”

The incident was reported to police who are investigating. Officers would like to speak to anyone with information about this incident or if they have experienced something similar.

Anyone with information about people in the area in possession of an air weapon, or who knows the person responsible, should contact PC Brett Paul at Yeovil Police Station on 101, or phone the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
