Speedway isn't known as a winter sport in the UK, but Cases Somerset Rebels are getting ready to stage a unique Christmas meeting over the festive period.
Sponsored by Salt Express, the Somerset Rebels Christmas Cracker will be an individual meeting at the Oaktree Arena on Friday, December 28 (7pm).
Sixteen riders will compete over 20 heats for the title at the Highbridge circuit, although the format could be altered to include a semi-final and grand final.
Rebels co-promoter and meeting coordinator Garry May said: "Our initial plans are for a traditional 16-rider, 20-heat format but, depending on how things progress with the planning and organisation of the meeting, we could well add in a semi-final and grand final, which will bring added excitement to the event.
“We have already had many riders including some from the Elite League verbally agree to ride in the meeting, and we might even have a rider competing who, to the best of my knowledge, has never ridden speedway in the UK before.
“Names of those who will be taking part will be released as and when we have received firm confirmations.
“The actual meeting will get underway at 7pm, but we are looking to make it more of an event than just the meeting itself, with things such as a collector’s fayre and other attractions, so that fans can arrive early and make more of an afternoon and evening of it.
"More details of these added attractions will be released over the course of the next few weeks.”
Meeting sponsor Salt Express is a team partner of the Rebels, and is one of the UK’s leading salt suppliers and distributors - including for snow and ice clearance.
“We are very pleased to have Salt Express as meeting sponsors," said May.
"They have been very supportive of the Rebels in 2012, their first season as a team partner, and there will be rider and heat sponsorship packages available, details of which will be announced very shortly.”
