Council officials are trying to trace the owners of a dog found tied to a fence in Yeovil in freezing temperatures last week.

A member of the public alerted South Somerset District Council enforcement officers to the dog which they found in a "distressed state" at the Sunningdale Doorstep Green shortly after midday on Thursday, January 17.

The caller said that the dog had been tied up since 8am that morning in freezing temperatures.

Two men - one resident of flats which overlook the area and a man attending his allotment - told the enforcement officer who found the dog they had seen a man tying the dog to the fence and running off, 15 minutes before the officer arrived.

The dog was released and taken to kennels.

District councillor Jo Roundell Greene, portfolio holder for Environment and Economic Services, said: "If you know the owners of this dog then please contact us so we can pass the details onto the RSCPA.

"To abandon your dog is a selfish act and we urge the public not do this as there are always ways to re-home your dog. If you have an animal that you perhaps can no longer afford to keep, contact the RSPCA or council for advice.

"If we find out who the owner of an abandoned dog is, we will be billing them for our costs as well."

If you recognise this dog, please telephone the enforcement officers with any information. This will then be passed to the RSPCA who could prosecute the person responsible for abandonment.

Telephone 01935 462462 with any information. If you are interested in giving a good home to an abandoned or stray dog, contact St Giles Kennels at Wrantage, near Taunton, on 01823 490333.
