Around 100 tonnes of hay went up in flames in a huge barn fire at a farm near Wells last night.

City firefighters were joined by crews from Shepton Mallet, Yeovil and Street to fight the blaze at Middle Thrupe Farm, Maesbury.

Emergency services were on the scene shortly after 8pm last night, and spent the entire night fighting the fire, which had also spread to a nearby farm building and silage stock.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service reported that steady progress had been made with the hay and silage by the early hours of this morning, and that nearby buildings and tyres had been protected.

Further support was requested from Bridgwater, Frome and Glastonbury, and the service said the fire was brought under control at 3.24am this morning.

The fire and emergency services operation woke several Wells residents last night.

One said: "I could smell smoke throughout the house and couldn't find the cause until I went outside and realised it must be a large blaze over the Mendips. I hope no-one was hurt."
