Sustained commitment rather than skill is what Yeovil Town lack over the course of 90 minutes, according to manager Gary Johnson.
The Glovers visit Crawley Town tonight three days after a lacklustre first half at Swindon Town condemned the South Somerset side to an eventual 4-1 defeat in npower League One.
The Huish Park boss was left again questioning his side’s application during the game, as Yeovil showed just glimpses of their ability.
Johnson said: “We have got to try and get that second half commitment. I wouldn’t say skill and ability, I would say commitment because we grappled the game back a little bit.
“We can’t afford to go anywhere with that half an hour display after the start at Swindon where they out-played us, out-fought us and out-clevered us.”
The manager added his players would be in for a rough ride before the coaching staff picked up morale ahead of the first ever Football League clash between Crawley and Yeovil at Broadfield Stadium.
“We have to knock them down first,” said Johnson. “We have still got a team that’s learning and we are still trying to teach them first.
“How many times against Swindon did we put the ball down for set plays and bash it forward? We didn’t win the first one and couldn’t win the second one.
“That’s just them losing their confidence a little bit and wanting to kick the ball as far as they can. It’s okay if you’re winning everything up there but if you’re not - and we weren’t – then you have to play it a lot shorter, more often.
“There were a lot of things that didn’t quite go for us but we know Crawley are another team that are above us and one day we will start infiltrating those teams and we will know we are getting there. As we saw on Saturday, we are not there yet.”
Reading loanee Gozie Ugwu moved a step closer to his Glovers’ return, featuring for his parent club’s under-21s team against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday. The striker has been missing since the start of October with a hamstring injury.
