A COMEDIAN from Clevedon will attempt to tell hundreds of jokes in an hour to break a world record and raise money for Comic Relief.

Kevin F Sutherland, who writes and draws for The Beano, hopes to smash the Guinness World Record on Wednesday in front of an invited audience at the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre, Bristol, which he created.

The current record for telling the most jokes is held by the Australian comic Anthony Lehmann, who told 549 in 60 minutes in May 2005.

World record adjudicators will be in the audience to check that every joke receives a laugh.

Any that don't will not be counted in the record attempt.

He said: "The jokes will need to be short. I'm trying to do 600 in 60 minutes – that's 10 in a minute, or one every six seconds."

The Groom Room in Nailsea is doing something quite different for the appeal.

On Saturday, owner Carolyn Simpson and staff will be outside Aaron's Pets from 10am to 4pm offering creative dog stenciling and free nail trimming.

Year 2 children at Portishead Primary School held a second-hand toy and book sale and raised £80 in the first of numerous events in the run up Red Nose Day, including an Egyptian Day, a dance competition and a Top Gear-style race track event.

A favourite for the pupils is likely to be co-headteacher Richard Riordan being gunged.

Year 2 teacher Kate Sparks said: "The children have great fun planning their class fundraising activities, which has given them a great sense of involvement and allowed them to use their creativity and entrepreneurial skills."

The Mercury would like to hear from readers who have thought of fun and unusual ways to raise money for the charity.
