Students and lecturers at ten colleges in Wiltshire have been told they now hold the world record for the most number of people wearing paper hats at the same time – a year after they made the attempt.

It has taken more than 12 months for authorities at Guinness to officially validate the bizarre record attempt, which involved college students, visitors and staff putting on paper hats for six minutes at the exactly the same time.

The record was a new one, and the brainchild of students in Trowbridge, who wanted to stage an event with the aim of raising public awareness about waste and recycling issues.

The college said the complexity of the challenge meant that it has taken a year to check and confirm the evidence submitted to the world record authorities.

So now, the official record for "Most People Wearing Paper Hats (multiple venues)" stands at 1,664, and a challenge has been thrown down to universities, businesses and colleges around the world.

Wiltshire College principal Di Dale said that she was delighted to have secured the accolade.

"The record attempt was a true college-wide team effort of which we can all be proud and I would like to congratulate everyone involved," she said.

"It is without doubt deserved recognition for a fantastic effort of logistics and was a memorable way in which to promote the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle message to our students, staff and the wider community of Wiltshire," she added.

Student union governor, and a student in Salisbury, Steven Hughes was one of those who took part.

The 18-year-old said: "I really enjoyed taking part and felt that it was a great success as it created team spirit within each campus and promoted how we as a college look at issues such as the environment.

"The student union works hard to reduce the college's carbon footprint and help the environment and I am pleased to have raised awareness about that through the world record attempt and to have helped make it possible."
