A famous carol service is being recreated at Truro Cathedral in Cornwall to celebrate the creation of a piece of Christmas history. The first Nine Lessons and Carols service was held in 1880, having been devised by the then bishop, Edward White Benson, and has gone on to be adopted around the country. In 1880 some 400 people crammed in to hear carols, readings and several anthems from Handel's Messiah. About 1,000 are expected on Christmas Eve.
