Bath-born baking queen Mary Berry has caused a run on cherries at the supermarkets. It has been reported that shoppers are snapping up glacé cherries following an episode of the Great British Bake Off this week. Waitrose has reported a 25 per cent lift in sales, after contestants competed to make their own version of co-judge Mary Berry's cherry cake. The supermarket has also claimed a 22 per cent rise in sales of cake tins and similar number of customers buying piping bags. Some 7.3 million viewers have tuned in, up from five million when it was on BBC2 last year.
