A national charity that provides support to people in Somerset has gone into administration.
People Can is contracted by Somerset County Council to support people who have difficulties in some aspect of managing their household.
Up to 300 single people aged 16 and over in Somerset receive support with tasks such as managing their household budget, establishing good relations with neighbours or keeping essential appointments.
People receiving this support typically have lifestyles known as 'chaotic', and may formerly have been homeless.
The council was already working with People Can to decommission the service in April 2013 because it believes there are better ways of meeting these needs through skills development and putting a greater emphasis on community involvement.
This announcement means the council's contract will end immediately, as will the existing packages of support that individuals receive.
The council claims to have identified appropriate providers in each of the districts who are willing and able to offer support to people who would otherwise be without it when People Can ceases to trade.
The services they provide will be different but will be appropriate to people's needs, according to the local authority.
The county council will send a letter to all those who receive a service from People Can providing them with information about how to get alternative support.
