Around 40 cars were stranded on the A38 near Wellington this evening after heavy snow saw traffic grind to a halt.

Drivers spent hours stuck on the road as several inches of snow fell within the space of an hour, leaving stretches of the road impassable.

Conditions were particularly dangerous in both directions at the Brimstone Lane junction near Whiteball, between Wellington and Tiverton.

By 6pm, police had closed the A38 between Wellington and Tiverton due to the treacherous conditions.
