BUSINESSES in Somerset are being warned of bogus callers offering rates refunds.
According to South Somerset District Council, scam callers are claiming that they need business's bank details so the refund can be made.
Councillor Tim Carroll said: "Telephone scams are prevalent at the moment, and in this case they are promising a refund of business rates. It is important that you do not pass on any bank account details."
A council spokesman added: "If you pay your business rates by direct debit we already have your bank details. If you pay another way we will send you a refund cheque. This is also true for Council Tax payers.
"If you get a call from someone saying they are from the council asking for your bank details to give you a refund, stop and think. Do not give out your bank details. Ask the caller for their name and telephone number and say you will call them back.
"Our telephone number is 01935 462462. Call this number and ask for the Revenues Team. They can check your account to see if you are due a refund and let you know how we will pay it to you."
