Emergency supplies are being delivered by boat to more than 100 people who have been stranded in their flooded Somerset village for six days.

Burnham-on-Sea's rescue boat has been tasked with delivering food, drink and urgent medical and dental needs to residents in Muchelney, near Langport.

It has also helped ferry residents into Langport, so they can stock up on further food supplies.

Wessex 4x4 Response has also been helping by taking villagers into nearby Langport after disembarking.

All roads in and out of the village have been under several feet of water for nearly a week, effectively turning Muchelney into an island.

“We are very grateful to the help given by voluntary groups stepping in during this crisis,” said Somerset County Council leader John Osman.

“Our own staff have linked up with partners and emergency groups to help a large number of people who were basically stuck, with no way in or out of the village.”

Resident Nick Cater works for Somerset Waste Partnership and said the community has pulled together to help one another, but added that outside support was very welcome.

“The water is chest deep and extremely cold; you can wade through it but it is obviously hazardous," he said.

"We are grateful to all those who have stepped in to help our community.”
