There was drama in the Bridgwater area last night with blue and yellow flashes spotted in the sky after a power blackout affected nearly 3,000 homes.

Many onlookers thought they were seeing fireworks after the massive fault led to the colourful flashes.

There was also speculation that the fault may have been caused by North Petherton Carnival's illuminated carts, but it was actually caused by power lines coming down near Shapwick village. Power went out on 2,717 homes in the Bridgwater to Street area at 11.33pm for two minutes while the alternative power source was started up. The main power fault is still being examined today.

A Western Power Distribution spokesman said: "It may have been caused by a buzzard or something like that. It was a huge fault with 33,000 vaults which meant there were flashes in the sky which would have been seen over a substantial area. There were a lot of rumours that Hinkley Point had blown up but this was not the case."

On Twitter SomersetLassKel said: "Bridgwater went black with no electricity for a couple seconds and there were sightings of a yellow and white flash in the sky."

Lucy Fitchew said on Twitter: "Either Hinkley point has blown or a carnival cart has hit a power line."
