A family had to be rescued after their car got stuck on Brean beach on Sunday evening.

Brean's beachwarden called out BARB Search & Rescue at 4pm when the driver of a Ford Mondeo reported the vehicle was stuck 200 metres from the top of the North Somerset beach with his partner and child inside.

"Our volunteer crews were quickly on scene and BARB's tractor was used to haul the stranded vehicle to safety," said a BARB spokesman.

The car owner, Joe Doyle from Highbridge, in Somerset, thanked the crews, saying: "I didn't think I was far enough out to get stuck. We'd been driving along the beach and suddenly the wheels had got stuck – it's certainly taught us a lesson."

"We are very grateful to the beachwarden and BARB."

The BARB spokesman added: "This is the first vehicle to get stuck here this year and it serves as a warning to other motorists about the dangers of driving across soft sand and mud.

"The advice is to keep to the hard sand at the top of the beach in the designated parking areas."
