Old Centralians suffered a setback in their bid to escape relegation from National Three South West.

But it was only in the last quarter of the game that Barnstaple were able to shake off their tenacious visitors.

The home side were always in front after Luke Berry's sixth-minute penalty and never truly looked like losing the game.

After Ollie Locke converted Lewis May's breakaway try early in the second half, there were only three points in it. But Barnstaple went on to secure the win with tries by Mark Galliford, Will Topps and Tom Heard.

With only two defeats in six games, Cents rightly fancied their chances of a vital away win against a North Devon team whose form had stuttered since Christmas. Barum, though, were determined to make up for the 51-0 trouncing they suffered at the hands of Lydney in their previous home game and made a bright start.

Berry made it 10-0 when he converted a penalty try.

And their were further first-half tries for May, and ex-Hartpury College wing Ryan Brend.

In the second half May crossed again and Winston James looped home before the three-try onslaught sealed the win.
