A bakery in inner-city Bristol has been named Baker of the Year in the national Farm Shop and Deli Awards.
The accolade for the East Bristol Bakery is the latest step in a short but remarkable journey for the business.
Owner Alex Poulter was unsure where his career was going as he moved from one minimum wage bar or shop job to the next. When he got some work experience in a bakery, he had found his calling, but still not a career as there were no jobs locally.
Undeterred Alex decided to go into business. He worked with Outset Bristol, an organisation that supports people setting up in business, and has not looked back.
Alex, 28, said: "It's great to be recognised as part of the fantastic food scene that we have going on in the UK."
Chair of judges Nigel Barden said: "It's inspiring to find East Bristol Bakery is so much at the heart of its community."
