Accused Shepton Mallet lead thieves in court

TWO men have appeared in court facing a string of charges of stealing lead from the roofs of properties in Shepton Mallet.

In the dock before Somerset Magistrates were Jordan Reece Hughes, 19, of Longway Avenue, Bristol and Jacob Damsell, 24, of Briscoes Avenue, Hartcliffe.

They were both jointly charged with ten counts of stealing lead sheeting of an unknown value from various addresses in the town.

They were also alleged to have committed a further four attempted thefts of lead sheeting.

All the matters were alleged to have been carried out overnight on September 13.

Prosecutor Christine Hart told the court at Yeovil that the defendants were arrested after the police discovered them at the location where the thefts had been carried out with the lead in their vehicle.

They later claimed they had found the lead abandoned at the side of the road.

Hughes and Damsell both pleaded not guilty to the allegations and after a pre-trial review was conducted the case was adjourned for them to stand trial together on February 28.

In the meantime they were both released on unconditional bail.
